As the exhaust fan pulls moist air out the bathroom, outside air has to be drawn into the bathroom somehow to "refill" the air inside the bathroom.

(1) If the window is tightly closed, indoor air will be drawn in likely through the narrow gaps around the door. The exhaust fan probably works less effectively this way, because of higher hydraulic losses in airflow.

(2) If the window is partially opened, outside air will be drawn in through the window. A partially opened window located on opposite wall of the exhaust fan in the bathroom is most effective, because of more thorough air circulation.

Most importantly, if a gas stove is installed inside the bathroom, it would be safer to open the window some for better ventilation in case there is a gas leak. You never know. Better safe than sorry.
